Pakistan develops high-yield garlic varieties

In Pakistan the breeder's develop new desirable verities of garlic which give us high-yield in one hectare it produces 24 tons of garlic.

PARC Chairman Dr. M Azeem Khan stated that Pakistan currently produces 81,167 tons of garlic per year, ranking 19th in the world. This output is very low compared to high-yielding countries.

Dr. M Azeem Khan said: "According to FAO data, the countries with the highest garlic production in the world include China (22,333,877 tons), India (1,721,000 tons), Bangladesh (461,970 tons) and Egypt (286,213 tons).

This means that Pakistan must import approximately 46,139.8 tons of garlic from a country like China. At this time, due to the  of special circumstances, the import of garlic was greatly affected. The President of PARC also stated that in order to combine research-based agricultural solutions with revolutionary and modern agriculture and obtain commercially important high-yield crop varieties in Pakistan, the National Agricultural Research Center under the leadership of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (NARC) has established several research and development projects.

The Vegetable Crop Research Program (VCRP) of the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) under NARC started garlic variety development activities in 2009-2010 to develop high-yield garlic varieties in the country.

A spokesperson for PARC said that chief scientist Humayoun Khan and a mixed breeding team started to develop the NARC-G1 garlic variety and obtained approval. Compared with all other garlic varieties grown in the country, this is the one with the highest yield (24 tons per hectare). Dr. Khan further added that PARC arranged an on-site inspection meeting at NARC in June 2020 to further promote the approval of the variety by the Provincial Seed Committee.
